 2018 National Blue Ribbon School

Hawthorne Elementary Named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School

(SALT LAKE CITY) – Today (Oct.1, 2018), Hawthorne Elementary was named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The Hawthorne school community includes a wide spectrum of academic abilities, ethnicities, education levels, and socio-economic statuses. Nearly one quarter of Hawthorne students live in poverty, and ten percent are English Language Learners, speaking 12 different home languages, including Arabic, Korean, Spanish, and Urdu. The school embraces the district vision of "Excellence and Equity: every student, every classroom, every day" and seeks to make it a reality.

"Hawthorne’s principal, students, teachers, staff, parents, and community are truly deserving of this award," said Salt Lake City School District Superintendent Lexi Cunningham. "They believe that all students have the right to a full range of educational experiences to meet their diverse needs. They have worked hard to build respectful relationships and collaborations with all stakeholders to support the success and personal development of students."

Hawthorne combines three distinct programs – a gifted and talented program that draws students from across the city; one of the district’s Curriculum and Assessment Lab programs, which is a unique setting for the research and development of interactive teaching practices; and a neighborhood school - into one successful school. These three diverse programs at Hawthorne have spawned a rich set of responses to instruction and professional development.

"Hawthorne Elementary is three programs under one roof with a focused mission: provide excellence and equity for all students in an environment of academic growth, personal achievement and diversity," said Hawthorne’s Principal Marian Broadhead. "We believe that shared leadership, mutual respect and support among, teachers, parents, community volunteers and administrators profoundly impact our students’ achievement. Student success is our top priority."
